Accreditation is a significant factor of fashion schools and programs. Fashion schools that receive an accredited status are viewed as providing an education of academic quality and integrity. Accredited fashion schools offer the student the best, most reliable education for their dollar. In addition, it means that the fashion industry will consider the education and the fashion degree received to be valuable.
The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) is an accrediting body for fashion, art, design, and related disciplines. The NASAD grants institutions and programs accredited status if they meet educational standards the association and industry professionals have established. In addition to the NASAD, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) evaluates and accredits fashion and related programs.
Six regional accrediting organizations that can approve fashion institutions and their programs are:
- North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
- Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
- Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
The following are resources related to fashion education accreditation:
- Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA, formerly FIDER)
- Council of Arts Accrediting Associations (CAAA)
